CLEANSE

WE CARE    WE FIGHT

2010

Colon cleanse is often done with laxatives (natural or not). However, there are some easy ways where your diet can effectively aid the process of removing toxins and waste proteins from the body.

It might sound too simple, but vegetables do in fact play a crucial role in detoxifying the human body and not just the colon.

Imagine your daily meal as a medley of natural medicines. It is all a matter of magnifying the effects of some nutritious food types while eliminating the not-too-beneficial ones.

Vegetables for Colon Cleansing

There are specific vegetables that would form the core of a cleansing diet.

As a non-meat protein source, soy and soy products may be eaten. Aside from providing protein necessary for metabolism and muscle growth, the protein in meat also has anti-cancer properties.

It is not true that soya aggravates arthritis. Meat proteins result in far higher levels of uric acid in the bloodstream than vegetable protein sources. This means that dropping the meat and opting for vegetable proteins would alleviate the debilitating symptoms of arthritis.

If you fear that fruits might predispose you to diabetes and a lifetime of regular insulin shots, then it is time to forget that myth as well. The chances of anyone getting diabetes by simply eating fruits are very low.

Fruits that specifically cleanse the colon and the whole digestive tract are enzyme-rich fruits:

• Papayas

• Mangos

• Pineapples

• Kiwi fruits

If you like strawberries, feel free to indulge. Just make sure that the strawberries would not be served with cream or fine sugar.

The Risks of Going on Raw Diet

There are two contending views regarding a “raw” diet. The first view is fear of a raw diet due to salmonella and E. Coli poisoning. The second view disregards the first view as an excuse not to eat in a healthier manner.

There are kernels of truth in both views. It is true that poisoning can occur if you indulge continually in vegetable salads that have not been washed well. The second view is also correct since many write off eating raw vegetables out of pure avoidance of the food.

A rule of thumb when eating raw vegetables is always wash the vegetables thoroughly.

Bigger attention should be given to leafy vegetables since there are more surfaces where bacteria lurk. Use soapy water when washing vegetables and rinse very thoroughly.

If you are uncomfortable with completely raw vegetables, you can blanch the vegetables before eating. You can even add a dash of salt to taste.

Raw vegetables and cooked vegetables have the same amount of fiber, with or without the application of heat. So why should we bother eating raw vegetables?

Vitamins and minerals are actually lost during cooking. Large percentages of these vital micronutrients mix with the cooking medium. Some vitamins are destroyed by heat.

A Note on Meat Avoidance

If you are going to skip meat for a long period, make sure that you are substituting ample amounts of vegetable protein. Make sure too that you have a daily source of ferrous compounds. Failure to consume the same amounts of macronutrients and micronutrients might result in anemia and malnutrition.
